A domain name is like a digital address in the online world — unique and available on a first-come, first-served basis. It represents your distinct identity on the Internet.

Whether you’re a company that wants customers to reach you anytime, anywhere, or an individual looking to showcase your experiences and share your knowledge, owning a domain name helps you do it more efficiently and effectively.

Understanding the Value of Domain Names

To make the most of a domain name, it’s important to first understand the value and information it carries. Since domain names are not frequently changed, taking time to evaluate before registration can save significant time and cost in building a lasting online identity.

From a single domain name, you can learn:

  1. Who owns the website’s domain name
Through global WHOIS or RDAP lookup services, you can find publicly available registration details about a domain name — including who registered it, when it was created, and through which registrar.

You can also search for any .tw or .台灣 domain name using the search bar on the TWNIC homepage or under the Domain Services → Domain Registration section.

  2. Who the registry operator is for this domain name
The last portion of a domain name after the dot (“.”) is called a domain extension (TLD, top-level domain). Domain extensions can be categorized into:
    • cctld (country code top-level domain) :
These are two-letter extensions representing a specific country or independent economy. For example, Taiwan’s ccTLD is .tw, the United Kingdom uses .uk, and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands use .cc.
Users often identify the geographic relevance of a website through its extension. Registering a .tw domain not only gives you a familiar local extension but also signals local presence and internationally recognized credibility.
    • gtld (generic top-level-domain) :
Common examples include .com, .net, and .org, which traditionally help indicate the nature of the service or organization. Since June 2011, the introduction of New gTLDs has expanded naming possibilities beyond traditional extensions, making options like .xyz and .top available. Each domain extension is managed by a registry operator responsible for its administration and related policies.
Each domain extension is managed by a registry operator responsible for its administration and related policies. For .tw, the registry operator is TWNIC. With operations based in Taiwan, TWNIC can respond flexibly to market needs and provide services aligned with local policies — eliminating concerns about policy misalignment between the registry and the local market.
In addition, TWNIC is the world’s first national registry operator to be certified under ISO 27001 (Information Security Management System), ISO 9001 (Quality Management System), and PIMS (Privacy Information Management System). Since adopting these standards in 2004, TWNIC has successfully passed numerous annual audits and full re-certification reviews, ensuring consistent and reliable service quality.
  3. Whether the website behind the domain is trustworthy
Although the content of a website linked to a domain name is configured by the registrant, some websites engaged in malicious or unlawful activities tend to choose domain extensions that have less oversight, fewer resources dedicated to abuse mitigation, or looser operational controls.
Beyond establishing robust anti-abuse policies, TWNIC actively fosters cross-border and cross-organizational collaboration to maintain the trustworthiness and security of the .tw namespace, safeguarding the rights and interests of all domain stakeholders.
In addition, according to the latest 2025 domain perception survey for the Taiwan market70% of respondents indicated that a domain extension influences their sense of security and trust, and among the 1,504 randomly sampled participants, .tw was significantly more trusted compared with other extensions.
